The ballet is about a girl named Coppélia who sits on her balcony all day reading and never speaks to anyone.
A village girl, Swanhilda, sees her fiancé, Franz throwing kisses at Coppélia. She is furious! The house with the balcony belongs to Dr Coppelius, an eccentric old Toy maker. Swanhilda happens to find the key to his front door and talks her friends into exploring with her. They soon learn that Coppélia is actually a doll. She decides to impersonate the doll, in order to win the love of Franz. Chaos ensues, but all is soon forgiven. Swanhilda and Franz make up and get married. The marriage is celebrated with several festive dances.
